In a thrilling match at the Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley on Friday, the Windhoek Draught Griquas emerged victorious in a crucial encounter against the DHL Western Province.

The stakes were high for the Griquas, as a loss would have all but dashed their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. However, fueled by determination and an unwavering spirit, they overcame the odds to secure a memorable 38-29 win, making it the seventh time in a row that the Griquas have beaten boys from the Cape.

The game started with the Western Province displaying their strength and skill, scoring an early try and converting it just three minutes into the match. It seemed as though they were poised for a dominant performance. However, the Griquas quickly responded with a converted try of their own, refusing to let their opponents gain too much of an advantage.

Western Province managed to slip through the Griquas’ defence and score another try through clever ball movement, securing a soft try. Momentum swung back and forth, and just before halftime, the Griquas found themselves trailing by a score of 19-14.

Undeterred by the deficit, Griquas came out in the second half with renewed energy and determination. Within five minutes, Lubabalo Dobela soared over the tryline, showcasing exceptional athleticism and securing a beautiful try. The Griquas had now taken the lead at 21-19, and the tide began to turn in their favour.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Griquas seized control of the game. Executing a flawless running maul, they pushed their way over the Western Province's tryline, earning another well-deserved try. The fire within the Griquas players was unmistakable, and their determination was palpable.

Sango Xamlashe received a perfectly timed pass from Johan Mulder, cutting through the Western Province defence with precision and speed. His exhilarating run culminated in a try that extended Griquas lead to 35-29, leaving the opposition struggling to catch up.

In the final moments of the game, Griquas were awarded a penalty, which they confidently converted, further solidifying their victory. The final score stood at 38-29 in favour of the hosts.

The jubilation that followed the match was indescribable. Griquas had achieved what they set out to do, defying the odds and outplaying a formidable Western Province team that boasted URC players. The joy etched on the faces of the Griquas players was a testament to their dedication and relentless pursuit of victory.

Their triumph, however, did not grant them a moment of respite.

Looking ahead, Griquas now face another formidable challenge as they prepare to take on last year’s Currie Cup champions, the Airlink Pumas, in a highly anticipated match at the Windhoek Draught Park in Kimberley.

With the taste of victory still fresh, Griquas will be determined to carry their winning momentum into the next encounter, eager to continue their inspiring journey in the tournament.
