Eighth accused appears for the Lusikisiki mass killings

An eighth accused Songezo Vuma, 20, implicated in the Lusikisiki mass killings, appeared in the Lusikisiki magistrates court on Tuesday after he was apprehended on a bus, enroute to Cape Town, on January 5.

During the shootings that occurred in September last year, 18 people were killed after they were shot in the head while five others were injured in Nyathi village, Ngobozana.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Eastern Cape spokesperson Luxolo Tyali stated that Vuma abandoned his bail.

“The matter has been transferred to the Lusikisiki regional court, where he will join seven other accused on February 17.

“He joins Siphosoxolo Myekethe, 45, Aphiwe “AP” Ndende, 25, Lwando Antony Abi, 33 and Bonga Hintsa, 31, Zenande Paya, 38 and Mawethu Nomdlembu 36, who have all since abandoned bail. They are all facing 18 charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”

Tyali added that Paya and Nomdlwembu, were arrested in Flagstaff, on October 17 2024 in possession of the four rifles and ammunition that were allegedly moved to other locations, after the killings on 28 September 28 2024, in Ngobozana village.

“Two of the men, Ndende and Hintsa, were arrested in Port Shepstone, while Abi was apprehended in East London, on October 16 2024. Myekethe was arrested on October 7 2024, at his home in Mthimde location, Mamfengwini area in the district of Lusikisiki,” Tyali stated.
