THE ANC is expected to hold two memorial services in honour of former public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan.
The first will be at the Johannesburg City Hall on Tuesday at 4pm and the second in Durban on Wednesday.
Gordhan is scheduled to be cremated in Durban on Thursday.
The anti-apartheid activist died in hospital last week after a battle with cancer.
His long-time friends and fellow freedom fighters remember him as a selfless father and husband who dedicated his life to serving the oppressed.
The ANC has expressed deep gratitude for Gordhan’s contributions, stating that his efforts toward a non-racial society would never be forgotten.
The party described him as a beacon of courage, his legacy forever etched in history.
During the signing ceremony of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill on Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Gordhan would be given an official funeral.
Ramaphosa described Gordhan as one of the most courageous freedom fighters the country has known.
“I had the occasion to go and see and spend some time with him last night in hospital as I returned from Cape Town before he passed on, and after that, I was able to get a moment to speak to him even though he could no longer hear me.
“But it was a sad moment for me to be able to watch him as he was passing on, on his journey to another world.”
Family spokesperson Adrian Lackay announced Gordhan’s death in the early hours of Friday morning, at the age of 75.
Lackay disclosed how in his final moments, the former public enterprises minister told them he had lived a life of no regrets.
Gordhan retired from active politics after the May polls in order to spend more time with his family.
