A GROUP of youths residing in the Tsantsabane municipal area were trained in basic firefighting and fire prevention skills as part of a community safety drive.

The programme, which was run by Kumba Iron Ore’s Kolomela mine and a local company, Creative Minds, was initiated following a spate of shack fires in the Postdene and Carnation area, while Boichoko was identified as a high-risk area for runaway veld fires.

Course instructor Lucky Diale said emergency kits consisting of fire blankets and fire extinguishers were handed out to the participants to enable them to act as first responders in the event of a fire.

“The training will be for the greater good of the community. More community members will be trained in 2023,” said Diale.
