YOUTHS and volunteers from Save the Earth from A to Z, We Are One Family (ASEZ WAO) World Mission Society Church of God, cleaned up Waterworks Street in Kimberley on July 30 as part of their efforts to clean and green the environment.
Starlin Martin from the ASEZ WAO young workers’ volunteer organisation said the busy street was not frequently cleaned.
“There are a lot of people who come and go here because residential and commercial buildings are concentrated. Since cleaning is not done often, various kinds of garbage accumulate everywhere.
“Young people volunteered to create a healthy land ecosystem by cleaning the streets where families and neighbours come and go every day.”
He stated that they filled 112 garbage bags with disposable plastic cups, straws, plastic bags, cigarette butts, glass bottles and artificial hair that was collected at a street corner that was being used as a dumping site.
“It took nearly six hours to collect the garbage. The Department of Environmental Affairs provided cleaning tools such as garbage bags, shovels and rakes.”
Kimberley resident Johannes Swartz said he used his Sunday off from work to assist in picking up trash as he wanted to do more for the environment.
Sol Plaatje University student Ongezwa Njongwe added that while it was hard work, it was a satisfying feeling to see the difference after the area was cleaned.
