FIFTY young people from Prieska and surrounding towns were equipped with security skills after they completed a three-week security training programme presented by Landile Security Services and MBP Solar.

The training programme was aimed at addressing the high unemployment rate in the Siyathemba municipal area.

The social performance co-ordinator for MBP Solar, Joan Nel, said the training programme also provided the participants with the chance to identify possible business opportunities in the security sector.

“The beneficiaries of this development initiative, which comprises a near equal split of women and men, have indicated that the programme has been inspirational and has given them the confidence to kick-start their careers, with some even planning on establishing their own small businesses in this corner of the Northern Cape,” said Nel.

“The programme has also equipped them with essential skills and the necessary accredited qualifications to secure employment in the security sector as well as increase their access to the overall job market. Our hope is that with the skills imparted to these youngsters, they will have a better chance to access jobs and even start their own businesses.”

One of the trainees, Samantha Basson, said that the programme had given her “life-changing information”.

“The course was very beneficial and informative. I am now aware of the many opportunities present in the security field. I would also like to add more grades to my certificate. My goal is to start my own security company in the future and create more jobs in my community,” said Basson.
