KIMBERLEY Technical High School (THS) prides itself on being on the right track towards achieving its 2024 vision of preparing learners for the real world and the 4th industrial revolution.

Through its technical streams, THS is proud to have secured quite a number of achievements during the 2022/23 academic year.

The principal, Michael Ludick, said that the school’s vision is to strive to be the best technical school in South Africa, training engineers, architects and artisans.

Three learners from the school came third in the annual South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) international bridge building competition in 2022.

Kago Birapedi, Tony Bristow and Moegammet Jacobs competed against thirteen top schools from across the country and a university team.

The bridge building competition showcased an event in which both the theory and the practise of civil engineering had to come together to enable the participants to succeed.

Another achievement was that of Grade 9 learner Mathapelo Louw, who scooped third place during the Nkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History national competition.

Established in 2006, the competition caters for secondary school teachers and learners from Grade 8 to 11, with the aim of fostering a love and interest in history and to encourage learners throughout the country to engage with their shared histories in addition to exploring their personal and community history.

Louw was recognised in the Young Poets category.

Oregolele Kuriti was meanwhile selected as the 2023 Junior Station Commander and competed against 12 other junior station commanders.

Karabo Letebele was selected as the Visible Policing Head Commander at station level.

Four learners, Megan Lawrence, Avumile Aarens, Sibusiso Mazabane and Uwami Khumalo, are set to represent the Northern Cape at the week-long heritage camp over the October school holidays after achieving first place in the Heritage Education Schools Outreach Programme (HESOP).

The camp will take place at the ecological and historical Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

HESOP is an annual national schools project for Grade 8 to 11 learners, aimed at encouraging the youth to get to know their heritage better, as well as exploring the traditions and customs of other cultures.

They were required to do research and present a 20-minute presentation on topics such as climate change, digitization of heritage and using heritage as a tool to solve social issues.

Two learners, Mekayle Struss and Khumo Mawela, had the honour of receiving their laptops and prize money from the Northern Cape MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali, after coming second in the country during the South African Youth Water Prize competition in 2022.

Nine Land Service learners in Grades 9 to 12 have been selected to represent the Province at the national competition in Mpumalanga at the end of this year.

The school also won the ‘My Voice’ competition sponsored by the Canadian Embassy. It was awarded as the best high school in South Africa for its anti-bullying, drug prevention and mental health projects.

“We stand out as one of the best schools in the Northern Cape and our achievements are testament to this,” Ludick said.

“Next year will be a year of establishing ourselves as the school of choice in the Northern Cape, as we already are. Our vision is to go from strength to strength.

“We are implementing a new curriculum that will be ground-breaking in our Province. Thus far the learners have received full university bursaries through our projects from the Department of Water and Sanitation,” Ludick added.
