THE DRIVER and the bodyguard of the Speaker of Sol Plaatje Municipality were killed in an accident near Christiana on June 25.
The officials were on their way to collect the Speaker in Johannesburg at the time of the accident.
Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said the “unfortunate and tragic accident” occurred at around 6am on Sunday morning.
“Two of our officials, Elias Squire and Tebogo Dithabe, tragically passed away on the scene. Both officials were employees of the Sol Plaatje Municipality based in the Speaker’s Office. They were travelling to Johannesburg.”
Riet advised the public not to speculate regarding other passengers in the vehicle.
“We will allow the law enforcement agency to continue with their investigations to determine what exactly caused the accident. Our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones.”
Riet added that a memorial service would be held for the officials.
“The families are still in shock and arrangements will be made in conjunction with them.”
She indicated that the mayor, Speaker and three officials accompanied family members to lay a wreath at the accident scene in Christiana on Monday.
