THE PROVINCIAL Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, has praised the life sentence handed down to Chrisjan Brandt, 33, for the murder of his 27-year-old girlfriend, Karin Klein, in Sutherland.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the court heard that on November 26, 2022, Brandt reported Klein’s death to the police, claiming she had died after an altercation with an unknown woman the previous evening.

However, further investigation revealed that Brandt was responsible for Klein’s death. The investigation showed that Klein had been beaten with a plank of wood and a table leg.

On September 20, 2024, the Calvinia High Court sentenced Brandt to life imprisonment for murder and defeating the ends of justice.

Lieutenant-General Otola emphasised that addressing domestic violence remains a priority for the SAPS in the Northern Cape. She commended Detective Sergeant Elton Klein of the Sutherland Detective Branch for his thorough investigation, which led to the significant sentence for this brutal act of domestic violence.
