STAATS Primary School celebrated its 60th anniversary on January 20 with a colour splash picnic and a helicopter that landed on the school grounds.
A teacher at the school, Joane de Reuck, said that principal Christo van Wyk, deputy principal Clifford Klassen and former pupils Helmien van der Westhuizen and Sarie Myburgh arrived at the school in a fire engine.
“The new school rhino mascot was dropped off by a helicopter in the middle of the rugby field in a puff of blue smoke, much to the delight of the children. A torch was lit to symbolise the start of the festivities. Pastor Edwin Clark read out a passage and prayed over the school – that it would be built on a solid foundation.”
She added that a number of activities were held including teachers, parents, children and family members playing a game of tug of war with their blankets.
A parent said that the evening was enjoyable as well as memorable.
“It was fun to watch how the bright colours of the powder paint transformed some of the kids and parents into apocalypse zombies. Even the teachers, especially the deputy principal and the principal of the school, were unrecognisable after they were splashed with the powder paint.
“What was also very touching was that some of the Grade 7s from 2022 were invited to be part of the celebrations. It was a true Staats family evening where the school once again showcased their close bond with their learners, staff and parents. It was a true indication that if a child was once a Staatsie, they remain a Staastie.”
