A 34-YEAR-OLD man, described in court as a “habitual criminal”, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court for shoplifting groceries.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam stated that the accused, Doctor Dash Sibanyoni, was caught “red-handed” stealing items at a local business in Postmasburg.
“The court heard that Sibanyoni was caught on two different occasions – on August 16 and again on August 21. The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with theft,” said Sam.
He added that the prosecution team, led by State advocate Tshifiwa Muruba and investigating officer Detective Constable Simon Mqweba, established that Sibanyoni was a “habitual thief”.
Sam reminded the public that shoplifting is a criminal offence and the possession of stolen goods is a crime.
