The Deputy Minister of Police Shela Polly Boshielo, visited Kimberley and Galeshewe over the weekend to assess the state of readiness for the Safer Festive Season Operations.
Boshielo pledged the support of the Ministry of Police and encouraged members to protect and serve.
SAPS Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said the delegation conducted a roadblock on the N12 at Shell Ultra City on Saturday, where they engaged with motorists to create road safety awareness.
“During the stop and search at the roadblock, eight undocumented foreign nationals were apprehended.”
She added that disruptive actions would continue unabated in the province to address priority crimes, including alcohol and drug related crimes, crimes against women and children, property related crimes and contact crimes.
Meanwhile the Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola stated that the police would show a zero tolerance approach toward criminal elements within the province over the festive holidays
She stated that there would be more boots on the ground as newly recruited constables would reinforce the capacity of ground forces.
“Law enforcement will be supported by community police structures, reservists and other relevant external role players.
“Priority crimes, including all contact crimes, residential and business robberies, damage or tampering of essential infrastructure, crimes against women and children as well as drug and alcohol related crimes, and road safety will be vigorously policed.”
Otola added that detectives would be out in full force to trace and apprehend wanted suspects who were evading the law.
“Alcohol and substance abuse will not be tolerated, as this leads to the commission of serious and violent crimes.”
She also encouraged motorists and pedestrians to practice road safety precautions to minimise the occurrence of fatalities and serious road accidents.
“Disruptive actions, such as roadblocks and vehicle check points will also focus on the prevention of drinking and driving.“
Otola added that specialised units such as the search and rescue unit would monitor dams and rivers throughout the province.
“Residents and visitors to the Northern Cape, who enjoy the hot climate, are encouraged to practice water safety and to be cautious at all times.”
She advised home owners to safeguard their property when they were away on holiday and persuaded shoppers not to carry too many shopping bags or large amounts of cash.
She urged the community to report criminality to the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or via MY SAPS app.
“All information will be treated confidentially. We wish all visitors and inhabitants of the Northern Cape a safe and secure festive season and beyond,” Otola said.
