The MEC of the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Transport, Safety and Liaison Bentley Vass led the Safer Festive Season Operations at a roadblock on the N12 weighbridge in Kimberley on Christmas eve.

Spokesperson for Coghsta Tebogo Monyo said similar operations including static roadblocks were executed across the other districts of the province to intensify crime fighting efforts and ensuring safer roads and less accidents and fatalities.

“A total of 1954 vehicles were stopped and searched, 3924 persons searched and a total of 114 traffic were issued across the operations.”

He added that seven people were arrested during the operation including illegal immigrants, possession of tik and riotous behaviour.

Meanwhile the deputy minister of police Shela Polly Boshielo will assess the state of readiness in Upington on Saturday, December 28 as part of the Northern Cape Safer Festive Season Operations.

SAPS Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien said the MEC for Coghsta, Transport, Safety and Liaison, Bentley Vass, the acting deputy national commissioner for support services Lieutenant General Lineo Nkhuoa and the provincial commissioner for the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola would join the operation.

“The delegation will be visiting identified locations in Upington to assess operations.

“The deputy minister will also address the multi-disciplinary parade at the N14 weighbridge on the Upington and Olifantshoek Road. A visit will also be made to spaza shops in Pabalello, the Upington taxi rank and Kalahari mall,” she added.
