ARE WE meant to live this way and be OK with the stench hanging over our heads all day? Take a look at our streets and all the garbage running down our roads.

The Ritchie neighborhood just decided enough is enough and asked these questions. One of the locals said that the sewage has been pouring down the streets for several months, and in some cases for more than a year. Residents said, “It can’t go in like this. We have old people here who suffer with breathing, and our children run through the streets and this is making them sick.”

“The sewage water has turned green and foam is floating on top of 18 Eerste Street in Rietvale, and the same thing is happening in Milky Way. The smell is awful, and Van Wyk Street is a shambles. Since we live in Ritchie, it feels to us that we are out of sight and out of mind, even though we need Sol Plaatje’s help to solve this issue, he stated.

Thoko Riet, the spokesperson for Sol Plaatje Municipality, claims that a crew has been dispatched to assist with the obstructions.

“We don’t mind travelling to Ritchie to fix clogged drains, but we also need to figure out where the problem originates and why it keeps happening”, Riet added.

The mechanical crew will investigate the pump station, according to Riet.

“In light of everything discussed, a long-term solution to this sewer issue will need to be found. Let’s work together to safeguard and preserve our infrastructure to reduce these sewer clogs because we are here to serve our communities,“ suggested Riet.
