THE GALESHEWE Magistrate’s Court has been closed with immediate effect due to “threat of collapse”.

A prohibition notice was issued on July 13 by the Department of Employment and Labour whereby it was advised that no person should occupy the premises.

The Public Servants Association (PSA) notified the department about structural deficiencies and dangers posed to officials and the general public.

PSA provincial manager Steve Ledibane, on May 26, called for the immediate closure of the building to allow for urgent renovations to take place.

“We welcome the prohibition notice that was issued as PSA members at the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court are constantly working under dangerous working conditions. There are large cracks in the walls at the court building,” said Ledibane.

“Members pointed out these deficiencies to the department’s director-general during his last visit in Kimberley last week.

“It is alleged that some of the findings are that ‘the building is not safe to be at, let alone working there’.

“This problem has been coming on for a long time without any meaningful intervention. Courts are service points, therefore not only government officials but members of the public are also exposed to the dangers this building poses.”

Ledibane questioned whether a disaster had to happen before any action was taken.

“We advised members not to enter the building as it is a safety hazard.”
