A LARGE-scale police operation targeting drug dealing in Postmasburg has led to the conviction of a 33-year-old Congolese national, Leki Martin, who was sentenced in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court this week.
Martin’s arrest was the result of Operation Didiba, a joint effort by the Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Organised Crime Investigations unit, SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Kuruman Public Order Policing unit, and the SAPS Local Criminal Record Centre.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock revealed that officers executed an undercover entrapment operation, where an agent successfully purchased drugs from Martin at his residence in Newtown, Postmasburg. The operation culminated in his arrest on February 26, 2024.
The police opposed bail, ensuring that Martin remained behind bars until his sentencing. He was found guilty of dealing in drugs and was sentenced to either a R30,000 fine or three years in prison on February 12, 2025.
The SAPS Northern Cape management lauded the efforts of the units involved in the operation and also emphasised the importance of community co-operation in the fight against crime.
“The police need the community, and the community needs the police,” Lieutenant-Colonel Kock stated, urging residents to continue reporting criminal activity via the MySAPS app or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
