Operation Shanela intensifies efforts in Northern Cape, nets 334 suspects

Operation Shanela has continued its relentless efforts in the Northern Cape. The weekly multi-disciplinary operation, conducted between Monday, August 19, and Sunday, August 25, led to the arrest of 334 suspects across the Province.

THE MULTI-disciplinary, high-density law enforcement initiative “Operation Shanela” has continued its relentless efforts in the Northern Cape.

According to provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the most recent weekly operation, conducted between Monday, August 19, and Sunday, August 25, led to the arrest of 334 suspects across the Province.

Sergeant Shemane said that the operation included the stop-and-search of 3,101 vehicles and 7,178 individuals at vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks. These actions led to the arrest of 191 suspects for various serious crimes.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said that the disruptive actions included the stop-and-search of 3,101 vehicles and 7,178 individuals at vehicle checkpoints (VCPs) and roadblocks.

He added that the operation successfully dismantled criminal activities, resulting in the arrest of 191 suspects for various serious offenses.

Detectives also made significant progress by tracing and apprehending 143 wanted suspects who had previously evaded arrest.

The operation extended to farms and mines, where compliance inspections were carried out. Additionally, second-hand dealers, liquor premises and both formal and informal businesses were inspected, resulting in the closure of 11 unlicensed liquor premises and the confiscation of over a thousand litres of illicit alcoholic beverages.

A number of items were seized during the operation including firearms, ammunition, dangerous weapons, copper cable, a vehicle, drugs and cash believed to be the proceeds of crime.

Awareness campaigns at schools, a community imbizo, and community engagements were conducted across the five districts to further bolster community safety.

The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Nortehrn Cape, Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga, praised the district commissioners and senior officers for their leadership during these disruptive actions. He commended their unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance approach and their continued efforts to eradicate priority crimes in the Province.
