NINE learners from Jan Kempdorp Primary School were hospitalised for suspected food poisoning after falling ill after apparently eating chips they bought on their way to school.
Northern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said the nine learners received medical treatment after they suffered from stomach cramps, numbness and headaches.
“The department is aware of a possible food poisoning incident that occurred at Jan Kempdorp Primary School on October 23, 2023, where nine learners fell ill after they bought chips on their way to school,” said Van der Merwe.
“The learners were taken to hospital after showing signs of stomach cramps, numbness and headaches. They were treated and discharged from hospital after they were declared out of danger.
“The department is satisfied with the manner in which the school handled the incident and the support provided by the circuit manager, health officials and the Office of the Mayor.
“We further call on parents and school communities to be on high alert and check the products and snacks their children consume and purchase,” Van der Merwe concluded.
