BENEFICIARIES in the Frances Baard District recently received a spanking new set of wheels, thanks to a generous donation of wheelchairs from First National Bank.

The secretary of the Association for Persons with Disabilities in the Frances Baard District, Dorothy-Anne Howitson, emphasised that assistive devices are necessities and not luxuries.

She said that Kelebogile Geyers from Delportshoop and Masego Modirapula from Windsorton were the latest recipients, having received their wheelchairs last week.

“They will be the talk of the town with their new wheels thanks to the generous donation. From now on, they will be able to enjoy freedom, dignity, integration within the community and a sense of worth. The joy on their faces speaks volumes,” said Howitson.

She added that a third wheelchair, currently on back-order, would soon be delivered to another beneficiary in the district.

“The need for assistive devices is immense and the fact that the Department of Health has no ring-fenced budget for assistive devices results in clients being left isolated and alone at home. If the client is a child, it means that they are deprived of an education and are trapped in a cycle of poverty,” Howitson pointed out.
