IN A DISPLAY of community spirit and dedication to environmental preservation, 117 learners from the Northern Cape High School (NCH) Rotary Interact club joined forces with Sol Plaatje University’s Employee Wellness Office and Sol Plaatje Municipality for a significant clean-up effort in the streets and veld surrounding their school.
The joint initiative aimed to create a safer and cleaner environment for learners walking to and from school.
The targeted clean-up areas were Meyer and Hayston streets, as well as the field situated between Technical High School and NCH. The latter, known to be a common route for learners commuting to both schools, had been overgrown with tall grass and bushes, posing potential hazards to the learners’ safety.
Last week, Sol Plaatje Municipality took the lead in the preliminary phase of the project by cutting down the tall grass and bushes, setting the stage for the Interact learners’ clean-up operation.
The municipality also generously equipped the learners with gloves and black bags, essential tools for the task at hand.
With great enthusiasm and a shared passion for community service, the NCH Rotary interactors gathered at 10am on the designated day to kickstart their mission. For two hours, from 10am to noon, these young volunteers worked diligently to rid the streets of litter and make their community a better place.
Their dedication and hard work were evident as they made significant progress in clearing up the area around their school.
However, given the sheer volume of waste accumulated in the field between Technical High School and NCH, the learners faced a daunting challenge. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to pick up all the trash within the allotted time.
Undeterred by the scale of the task at hand, the NCH learners are not giving up on their commitment to a cleaner environment. They are determined to return at a later stage to complete their ambitious project and ensure that the field between Tech and NCH is free of litter, providing a safer pathway for all learners in the vicinity.
This remarkable collaboration between the NCH Rotary Interact learners, the Sol Plaatje University Employee Wellness Office, and Sol Plaatje Municipality stands as a shining example of the positive impact that can be achieved when people unite for a common cause. By working together, they have demonstrated the power of collective action in fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the well-being of their fellow citizens.
As the NCH Interact learners look forward to their next clean-up effort, their inspiring example serves as a beacon of hope and unity, encouraging others to take part in similar initiatives to preserve and enhance the beauty of their surroundings.
