THE NORTHERN Cape Tourism Authority (NCTA) has proven to be a strong competitor in the international tourism industry after it was awarded the first runner-up spot in the Outstanding Africa Tourism Media and Marketing category at the Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) Awards.

Out of 111 destinations or countries, the NCTA took up the first runner-up spot after Ghana was crowned the overall winner in the category.

The spokesperson for the NCTA, Tebogo Velembo, said they are honoured by the recognition.

“The Africa Travel and Tourism Leadership Awards recognises game-changers on the African continent and awarded the NCTA for the contribution it has made towards changing the image of Africa. We are extremely excited about this award as it acknowledges the Northern Cape not only as a desirable southern Africa holiday destination, but the Northern Cape Tourism Authority as a key player in the promotion of sustainable tourism on the African continent,” said Velembo.

“We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of all our partners in promoting the Northern Cape and Africa as competitive events and desirable leisure tourism destinations.”

Velembo said that despite the challenges faced by the tourism industry during the Covid-19 shutdown, the Northern Cape remains a favourite tourist destination for many residents on the African continent.

“The past two years have been difficult for the tourism industry worldwide but especially so on the African continent. However, we are convinced that we will transcend these challenging times and flourish once again. We are especially looking forward to once again welcoming visitors from the continent to come and explore the many authentic ‘Bucket List’ experiences of the Northern Cape.”

He added that the forum plays a vital role in the promotion of African tourism gems.

“The ATLF is the only forum of its kind in Africa that highlights tourism as a major economic pillar to diversify African economies. It brings together key stakeholders of Africa’s travel, tourism, hospitality and aviation sectors to network, share insights, and devise strategies for intra-Africa travel and tourism growth across the continent, while enhancing the brand equity of Destination Africa,” said Velembo.
