A SWIFT police operation led to the arrest of five suspects and the seizure of mandrax tablets during a vehicle stop on the N8 highway near Kimberley.

The operation, part of the ongoing Vala Umgodi crime crackdown, continues to reinforce state authority in the Frances Baard District.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team acted on intelligence received on Monday about a vehicle allegedly transporting drugs.

Authorities located and intercepted the vehicle en route to Kimberley. A tactical stop-and-search uncovered mandrax tablets inside the vehicle.

Five individuals – two women (both aged 29) and three men (aged 33, 36 and 42) – were arrested for possession of drugs.

The police also confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R10,000, along with a cellphone and the vehicle, valued at approximately R200,000.

Sergeant Shemane said that as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, the police remain committed to tackling illicit mining and related crimes in the Northern Cape.

He urged community members to report any suspicious activity to SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
