A MAN accused of selling fraudulent vehicle licence discs has been released on R500 bail by the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi said the accused, Vincent Christian Mkumbo, 48, a Tanzanian citizen well-known as “Chris Manufacturers”, appeared in court on Friday. He faces charges of cyber fraud, alternative fraud, alternative forgery and uttering.

“He appeared briefly before the court on October 4 for allegedly selling fraudulent vehicle licence discs to assist his clients in avoiding going to the traffic department for renewal. He received old, expired vehicle licence discs and clients would later collect ‘renewed’ discs for an amount of R350. His clients received a printout of the same licence disc with an extended expiration date,” explained Mnisi.

She indicated that Mkumbo was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team following a search-and-seizure operation that was conducted at house number 104/13 Promise Land, Kuruman, on October 3.

“During the search, a red and black USB memory stick and the accused’s cellphone were seized for further investigation. The accused was immediately apprehended.”

Mnisi stated that Mkumbo would be required to inform the investigating officer of his movements in and out of Kuruman at all times as part of his bail conditions.

“The case is postponed until December 5,” she added.
