A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court after being convicted of tampering with railway cables in Cassandra.
A 21-YEAR-old man who was convicted of tampering with railway cables was sentenced to 14 years and six months imprisonment by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on August 26.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the accused, David van Wyk, was found guilty of tampering with essential infrastructure when he was caught cutting the signal cable of a Transnet railway line in Cassandra, Kimberley, on March 2.
“He was subsequently arrested and bail was successfully opposed.”
The acting provincial commissioner, Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga, applauded Sergeant Orapeleng Mosala from the provincial Organised Crime unit for his meticulous investigative work and for securing the conviction and sentence.
“Crime related to the tampering of essential infrastructure remains one of the priorities of the organisation in the Province, and the police will display a zero-tolerance approach to ensure the safety of essential key points,“ he added.
