THE KIMBERLEY Regional Court sentenced 30-year-old Lucas Nqulunga to a five-year direct imprisonment term for the attempted rape of a 34-year-old woman in Galeshewe.

On August 1, 2022, the victim was walking home with Nqulunga when he began making unwelcome sexual advances.

Fearing for her safety, she attempted to flee towards her home. However, Nqulunga pursued her. When he caught up with her, Nqulunga tried to force himself on her.

Her cries for help were heard by her boyfriend who was at home and came to her aid, preventing the assault from escalating further.

In addition to the five-year direct prison sentence, the court declared Nqulunga unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his name to be added to the National Sex Offenders Register.

The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Palesa Martin, for her thorough investigation of the case.

Otola also encouraged community members to participate in the “Rate Our Service” online survey to help the police improve their services.
