A 34-YEAR-old man from Galeshewe was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court after he was convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said the girl was asleep at the time of the incident on May 1, 2022.
“During the early hours of the morning, the 11-year-old girl was woken up in her bedroom when she felt the accused touching her in an indecent manner. He dragged her to his bed and raped her. She was too afraid to report the incident,” said Ehlers.
“The following evening, on May 2, 2022, the accused took her to his bed and raped her again.”
Ehlers added that the child told her mother about the incidents, who in turn reported the matter to the police.
“The accused was arrested the same day and remained in custody until he was convicted. He was found guilty on two charges of rape and sentenced to life imprisonment for both counts on July 3.”
Ehlers said the accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
“His name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.”
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Tanya Serfontein from the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.
“Her thorough investigation led to the successful conviction and hefty sentence handed down by the court.”
Otola stated that the protection of children remained a priority for the SAPS.
