THE MOREMOGOLO Campus of the Northern Cape Urban TVET College in Galeshewe was abuzz with pride and celebration on November 30 as close to 100 school learners from Grades 5 to 12 were recognised for their hard work and achievements in mathematics and physics.

The event, hosted by the Maths & Physics Tutoring Organization, marked the culmination of the 2024 programme aimed at empowering young minds and boosting their academic success.

The prize-giving ceremony not only celebrated the completion of the programme by close to 100 participants from various city schools but also highlighted those whose marks have improved in technical maths, pure maths and physical science. Special awards also spotlighted the remarkable achievements of top-performing learners, recognising their outstanding progress and excellence in these subjects.

The Maths & Physics Tutoring Organization, a non-profit initiative launched in 2022 by Thabo Phungwayo and Chriszelle Visagie, began as a small project with just 20 learners in Floors No 2. Today, it has grown exponentially, providing tutoring to 150 learners and creating a significant impact in the community.

“Education is the key to unlocking potential,” said Phungwayo, who is pursuing his studies through Unisa. His dedication to education extends beyond the organisation, as he also supports Grade 8 and 9 learners at Pescodia High School.

Visagie, a former student of Moremogolo Campus, brings a personal connection to the initiative, inspiring learners with her own journey and success.

The organisation’s growth was bolstered by the support of Boston Kgaje Lecholo, the campus manager of Moremogolo Campus, who provided a larger venue to accommodate the increasing number of learners. Classes are held every Saturday, with three student tutors from Moremogolo Campus lending their expertise to guide learners.

Parents who attended the prize-giving expressed heartfelt gratitude for the programme’s impact. “My child’s confidence has grown tremendously, and so have their grades,” said one parent. The sentiment was echoed by many others, who acknowledged the profound effect of the programme on their children’s academic journey.

The event underscored the organisation’s mission to instil a love for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects among learners and to equip them with the tools to excel academically. As the programme continues to expand, its founders aim to reach even more learners in the community, nurturing the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

“Our goal is to inspire passion and dedication in STEM subjects,” said Phungwayo. “We want to see these learners excel and contribute to the world with their knowledge and skills.”

The prize-giving ceremony was more than a celebration of academic success; it was a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives to uplift and empower young people. The Maths & Physics Tutoring Organization’s story is one of growth, perseverance, and a commitment to the transformative power of education.

As learners and their families left the event, certificates and awards in hand, the message was clear: education not only changes grades but can also change lives.
