FUNDS raised from a motor vehicle exhibition in Kimberley were used to purchase groceries, blankets and toiletries for survivors of gender-based violence.

The event was held at Dragon House on Cecil Sussman Street on August 31.

Pathway to Change NGO events organiser Shontei-Lee Jones said on Monday that motor enthusiasts competed in over 20 vehicle categories including vintage, street class and super custom.

“The vehicles were judged and the winners were presented with trophies and certificates,” said Jones.

She emphasised that the rate of violence against women and girls in South Africa is among the highest in the world.

“According to official statistics, one in five women in relationships have experienced physical violence at the hands of their partners. Many more have suffered other forms of violence by men they know as well as strangers.

“A principal hurdle in tackling this issue is the fact that many cases of abuse are not reported to authorities.”

Jones added that women who suffered emotional, physical and physiological abuse were reluctant to report their perpetrators because they felt that their concerns would not be taken seriously or that they would suffer secondary victimisation upon approaching law enforcement authorities.
