AS PART of Eye Awareness Month, the Northern Cape Society for the Blind recently organised a Cane Walk to raise awareness about visual impairments.

The event saw participation from Sol Plaatje executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni, who joined the walk to experience first-hand the challenges faced by those with various eye conditions, using canes and goggles to simulate their experiences.

Megan Brockbank from the Northern Cape Society for the Blind highlighted their efforts in providing training, including cane weaving and bead work, for the visually impaired, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to society.

“We want them to keep busy and not just sit at home. We are also offering computer classes to prove that they can do anything if they put their minds to it,” she said.
