KUMBA Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine raised R1.8 million for community development initiatives through its annual Classic Charity Golf Day, which was held at the Kalahari Country Club in Kathu.
The sports and recreation adviser at Sishen Mine and Golf Day project lead, Kyle Inglis, said on Tuesday that the funds would be utilised to support 17 local schools to bolster academic excellence in the region.
“Twenty local service providers and contractors swung holes in a 36-team shotgun-style tournament with the participation fee starting at R50,000. As a result of the golf day, R1.8 million was raised and donated to local schools. With the support of the Department of Basic Education, the identified schools received funds ranging from R50,000 to R100,000, depending on their needs.”
Inglis added that the event not only catered for sports enthusiasts but also promoted social cohesion and economic development.
“Along with our partners, we have managed to raise substantial funds that will positively impact the lives of 12,000 pupils across 17 schools in our area. As a responsible corporate citizen, we understand the importance of using sports to demonstrate the value that lies within collaboration,” he said.
