WITH the aim of accelerating service delivery, the Sol Plaatje Municipality handed a fleet of vehicles worth R2.6 million to its Mechanical Engineering and Waterworks units.
The Speaker of the municipality, Nomazizi Maputle, also received a new vehicle - a VW Tiguan worth R617,156.55.
Sol Plaatje executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni said the delivery of the fleet, which has a total cost of more than R3 million, is to speed up response times to crucial and challenging service delivery matters within the municipal area.
“The brand new fleet acquisition consists of seven one-tonner bakkies - three Isuzu D-Max 4x4s for the Mechanical Engineering unit and four GWM Steeds for the Waterworks unit. All these vehicles were at a total cost of R2.6 million. The Speaker of the municipality was also allocated a new VW Tiguan, worth more than R617,156.55, as prescribed by National Treasury norms and standards, in spearheading her public participation tasks and overall office functions,” said Sonyoni.
“We have purchased these workhorses to ensure that we embolden service delivery by being more responsive.
‘On the part of the Waterworks unit, it ought to be avoided at all costs blaming the inability to reach the sites of burst pipes and leaking meters on the unavailability of the fleet. The unit is faced with the daily responsibility of monitoring the 30km bulk pipeline punctuated by rugged terrain.
“Equally, the Mechanical Engineering unit provides all-round support, from construction, repair and maintenance of essential to non-essential municipal infrastructure and machinery, amongst others. The bakkies are a service delivery pinnacle for the unit in accessing many sites.”
The municipal manager, Thapelo Matlala, added that the next envisioned investment will be towards a yellow fleet for landfill waste management and residential refuse collection.
