WET AND stormy weather over the weekend has caused havoc in the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape, where several areas experienced flooding and damage to residential structures.
A spokesperson for the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements, Traditional Affairs and Transport, Safety and Liaison, Babalwa Mzambo, said several areas within the Hantam, Kamiesberg, Nama Khoi, and Khâi-Ma local municipalities experienced intense winds and continuous rainfall on Sunday.
“This resulted in damage to residential structures, roads, informal housing, telecommunication lines and electricity infrastructure. Currently, Kamiesberg is experiencing flooded roads and disrupted telecommunication services. Some families in Hantam have suffered significant property damage and were relocated to the Lenie Skippers Community Hall. In Middelpos, power outages are persisting while about 15 informal households in Calvinia were damaged,” said Mzambo.
She added that roads in Buffelsrivier in the Nama Khoi Municipality were flooded.
“Motorists and road users are cautioned to exercise vigilance on the roads. Affected families have received temporary shelter and provisions, with ongoing assessments conducted by the Provincial Disaster Management Committee to extend further aid as required.”
Mzambo encouraged residents to stay warm and safe in the Namakwa District, as snow and unfavourable weather conditions are persisting.
