THE CIRCUIT Regional Court in De Aar convicted a 44-year-old man for the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl. The accused’s name has not been disclosed.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the incident occurred on November 11, 2023, when the victim visited her grandmother’s home in Carnarvon. The accused, who was conducting bathroom repairs, reportedly kissed and touched the child in a sexual manner during the visit.
The child informed her mother about the incident and the matter was reported to the police. Subsequently, the accused was arrested but later released on bail pending trial. The court found him guilty of sexual assault on July 5.
The court sentenced the perpetrator to six years of imprisonment, with a five-year suspension on the condition that he avoids any further convictions for the same offence during the suspension period. Additionally, his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
