Alleged cop killer faces fraud charges

THE CASE against 38-year-old Daniel Alberts, who was arrested after allegedly gunning down two Kimberley Flying Squad members, has been postponed to August in order to centralise fraud charges against him.

Alberts was arrested on August 22 last year after he allegedly fatally shot Constable Okaetse Mandindi, 35, and Sergeant Kedimetse Masilo, 45, following a high-speed chase. This was after the two police officers were following up on information about a motor vehicle that was stolen in Bloemfontein and en route to Kimberley on the day.

The two officers were reportedly shot and killed while trying to apprehend Alberts, who was wanted in connection with the theft of a motor vehicle.

Alberts allegedly shot the officers after he overpowered them and turned one of their own R5 rifles on them.

Both officers were apparently shot five times.

The police arrested Alberts in Riverton later that same day and allegedly found him in possession of the R5 rifle and an unlicensed firearm and drugs.

Alberts is facing two charges of murder, three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one count of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of theft.

The Kimberley Magistrate’s Court this week heard that Alberts has charges of fraud against him in Garsfontein, Benoni and Sandton.

The court postponed the matter in order for the additional charges to be added to the docket.

Alberts will remain in custody after he opted to abandon his bail application.
