A 52-YEAR-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment by the Williston Regional Court after he was found guilty of raping his 17-year-old niece.
SAPS provincial spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the girl was walking home from a friend’s house in Williston on June 27, 2023, when the accused - who was her uncle - invited her into his home, where he then threatened her with a knife and raped her.
“The Williston Regional Court sentenced him to 28 years imprisonment for rape of which six years were suspended for a period of five years. It was instructed that his name be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”
Sam stated that the thorough investigation, led by the investigating officer, Detective Constable Anthony Willemse from the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, and prosecution ensured that justice was served for children during and after Child Protection Month.
