Cops visit schools to promote child protection awareness
THE KIMBERLEY SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit and the Douglas SAPS Social Crime Prevention unit visited Bongani and Bucklands primary schools on May 30. The visit was part of a broader initiative to commemorate Child Protection Month.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock explained that the campaign is a part of SAPS’s commitment to Child Protection Month. This year’s theme, “Protecting South African Children, 30 years on,” underscores the ongoing efforts to safeguard the nation’s youth.
The team engaged with over 250 learners on a range of critical issues, including general bullying, cyberbullying, sexual offences, teenage pregnancy, the dangers of weapons, substance abuse and the importance of school discipline.
The learners were reminded of their fundamental rights, including the right to protection, dignity, freedom from human trafficking, access to education, care and freedom from cruel treatment.
The children were encouraged to respect their bodies and those of others, as well as being reminded of the important message, “If you see something, say something.”
