THE COLESBERG Regional Court handed down a 10-year prison sentence to a man from Kuyasa who attempted to rape a woman while she was sleeping in her home.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that the accused, 46-year-old Daniel Williams, broke into the house at around midnight on September 26, 2022.
“He forcefully tried to remove her clothes and rape the woman, who was alone in the house. The complainant fought back and screamed for help. A neighbour came to her aid, called the police and the man was arrested on the scene,” said Kock.
He added that Williams evaded his court appearances after being released on bail.
“He was re-arrested in December 2023 in Petrusville. He was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment by the Colesberg Regional Court on May 8. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”
The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Eric Ngcapayi from the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for his “meticulous investigation that led to the successful conviction of a GBVF perpetrator”.
