THE PHILIPSTOWN Regional Court handed down a 10-year prison sentence to a 23-year-old Northern Cape man, Michael Fortuin, for the brutal killing of a 55-year-old man.
The incident occurred in Phillipstown on April 5 last year and the police were alerted by the victim’s wife.
According to evidence delivered in court, the police found the victim lying in a pool of blood inside his home after being stabbed by Fortuin.
Law enforcement swiftly apprehended and arrested Fortuin and the meticulous work conducted by the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Zwelibanzi Nolusu, played a crucial role in bringing the perpetrator to book.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, and her management welcomed the 10-year prison sentence handed down to Fortuin.
Otola praised Nolusu’s dedication and thoroughness and she emphasised the importance of holding perpetrators of contact crimes accountable and ensuring the safety of the community.
In an effort to enhance police services, Otola also invited the public to participate in the ‘Rate Our Service’ online survey. By sharing feedback, community members can contribute to improving law enforcement efforts in combating crime.
