‘High-density’ police operation roots out crime in Postmasburg area
VARIOUS policing activities were conducted in the Postmasburg area on March 1 in a concerted effort to combat crime, raise awareness and foster a stronger bond between law enforcement and the local community.
Members of the ZF Mgcawu District Pro-active Policing unit, along with the local community policing forum (CPF) chairperson, Clement Baai, commenced the day by visiting Ratang Thuto High School. Here, 196 pupils underwent thorough searches in the presence of police officers, resulting in the confiscation of unauthorised items.
“Operation Shanela” high-visibility policing duties - initiated by the provincial head of Pro-active Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, together with the acting district commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Brigadier Monica Sebili, and the station commander of Upington, Brigadier Peet Coetzee - were conducted in the greater Postmasburg area.
The operation focused on key hot-spot areas, including Postdene, Newtown Maranteng, Boichoko, Greenfield, and the central business district (CBD).
Notable actions included six suspected drug houses being searched, with the aim of disrupting illegal activities, and eight liquor outlets undergoing compliance inspections, with one receiving a non-compliance notice.
Police officers also conducted blue-light patrols and foot patrols in all areas, where 157 persons were stopped and searched.
In a significant development, authorities intercepted a vehicle transporting suspected stolen livestock from the Upington area.
The truck was stopped on the N14 highway outside Olifantshoek and a total of 79 suspected stolen sheep, valued at R240,000, were recovered, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
Brigadier Kopeledi, during a parade address earlier in the day, emphasised the importance of active participation by all officers to ensure “boots on the ground” and to maintain unwavering dedication in the fight against crime.
Brigadier Sebili meanwhile expressed gratitude to all law enforcement agencies involved for “securing a successful operation”.
He encouraged police members to remain steadfast and consistent in their commitment to community safety and addressing crime.
