POLICE arrested a 66-year-old man for drunken driving and seized numerous dangerous weapons during random stop-and-searches in the greater Kathu area on December 30 and 31.

The arrest was made during a disruptive crime prevention actions operation meant to ensure that the regulations of the newly imposed level 3 of the Disaster Management Act were complied with.

Sergeant Ben Eiman and Constable Beatrice Canchibatho of Group 2 conducted the various operations.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Mashay Gamieldien indicated that a stolen bicycle was also recovered in the process.

“Various tuckshops were visited to ensure that compliance was adhered to in terms of closing times,” she said.

Gamieldien added that a 33-year-old male foreign national shop owner was also arrested and charged for selling fireworks without a license on New Years Eve.

“Police confiscated fireworks with an estimated value of R9 000,” Gamieldien said.

Kathu Station Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Sandra Boshof issued a stern warning that the police will adopt a zero tolerance approach when it comes to compliance of the Lockdown Regulations especially adherence to the curfew and the transportation and consumption of alcohol and illegal gatherings.
