EARLIER this year, Spotify launched personalised AI playlists that you can build using prompts. An exciting feature for music lovers who often appreciate a curated music selection but may not always easily find the perfect song to fit a particular mood or moment.

The feature goes a little beyond the generic playlist creation requests, like those based on specific genre or time frame. The use of AI means you could ask for a wider variety of custom playlists, even the most random like “songs to calm my dog” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse”, Spotify suggests.

The written prompts can reference all sorts of things, like places, animals, activities, movie characters, colours or even emojis, when words fail you.

Spotify advises that some of the best and unique playlists are generated when users mix a combination of genres, moods, artists and decades, in whichever way that suits their personal taste.

Spotify also leverages its understanding of users’ tastes to customise the playlists it makes with the feature. The streaming service is most loved and preferred for its excellent ability to create an algorithm that perfectly matches its users’ musical preferences.

According to Spotify, the AI feature has been successful in the UK and Australia, where it was initially launched in April and made available to Premium subscribers on Android and iOS devices.

As of September, the availability of this AI Playlist tool has expanded to the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand, and we are anticipating that it will be a globally accessible feature in months to come.

The AI-powered playlist creation tool can be found in the “Your Library” tab by selecting the plus button (+) at the top right of the screen and choosing “AI Playlist” in the menu next to “Playlist” and “Blend”. Users can tap the “Create” button to save the playlist to their library.
