IN CELEBRATION of 2024 World Elephant Day, South African National Parks (SANParks) highlighted the theme “Evidence-Based Conservation: The Success Story Behind South Africa’s Elephant Management Lessons”. The theme emphasises the importance of data-driven strategies in successfully managing elephant populations across the country's national parks, including the enigmatic Knysna elephant.
SANParks’ approach aligns with growing recognition of the ecological, cultural, and historical significance of elephants in the region. A recent survey among key stakeholders underscored this sentiment, stressing the need for caution and scientifically grounded interventions in elephant management. Respondents consistently highlighted the importance of relying on specialists' insights to inform decisions.
The Knysna elephant, an elusive icon of the Garden Route, continues to intrigue researchers and conservationists alike. According to SANParks' research, the Knysna elephant has consistently displayed evasive behaviour, shying away from human interaction. This trait necessitates a careful and minimal-intervention strategy to avoid disrupting the animal’s natural behaviour.
Based on these findings, SANParks has developed a new Garden Route Elephant Management Plan. This plan, which is now awaiting approval, advocates for a low-risk, minimal-disturbance approach that aligns with the recommendations of both stakeholders and scientific specialists. The plan underscores the complexities of managing elephants in unfenced, socially and ecologically interconnected systems like the Garden Route.
Looking ahead, SANParks is committed to working closely with authorities and stakeholders to better understand the intricacies of elephant conservation in the Garden Route. By fostering a shared understanding of the risks and opportunities involved, SANParks aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of elephant populations in this unique region.
The organisation remains steadfast in its mission to apply evidence-based methods to the responsible management of South Africa’s elephants. World Elephant Day 2024 serves as a reminder of the success and ongoing commitment to the conservation of one of the planet’s most iconic species.
SANParks' dedication to safeguarding the Knysna elephant, in particular, continues to demonstrate the importance of science-led strategies in ensuring a thriving, balanced ecosystem.
