The SAPS, in collaboration with Eskom and Transnet, conducted compliance inspections at scrap metal dealers in Petrusville and Hopetown, seizing R350,000 worth of suspected stolen goods and arresting three suspects.
THE SAPS Second-Hand Goods sub-component, together with the Provincial Essential Infrastructure Task Team (EITT) and in partnership with Eskom and Transnet, recently carried out compliance inspections at scrap metal dealers in Petrusville and Hopetown.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the multi-disciplinary compliance inspections focused on illicit metals, contraband, stolen cables, batteries, undisclosed business activities, and transit-related crimes.
During the inspections, the team confiscated various items, including burnt Transnet and Telkom copper cables, elbow fittings, pipes, solar panels, geysers, and manhole covers, with an estimated value of R350,000.
Three suspects, aged between 19 and 39, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods, including cables containing controlled metals with burnt coverings. Additionally, two dealers received official warnings, while another was fined for violating second-hand goods regulations.
To promote safety and awareness, pamphlets with safety tips were distributed among employees and clients at the inspected dealerships.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, praised the team and stakeholders involved, emphasising that curbing the proliferation of stolen or illicit non-ferrous metals is a top priority for the SAPS.
She urged the public to report any criminal activity to the police or anonymously contact the SAPS at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS app.
