After watching Orlando Pirates being knocked out by newly-promoted Magesi at Orlando Stadium earlier on Saturday, Sundowns produced a commanding display to dispatch Arrows.
Mamelodi Sundowns made sure that wouldn’t be on the receiving end of another giant-killing act in the Carling Knockout Cup when they hammered Golden Arrows 5-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.
After watching Orlando Pirates being knocked out by newly-promoted Magesi at Orlando Stadium earlier on Saturday, Sundowns produced a commanding display to dispatch Arrows.
There was again no space for Teboho Mokoena in the Sundowns’ starting line-up, but the Bafana Bafana midfielder did come off the bench with 20 minutes to go in the match.
But it was not like Sundowns really needed him on the pitch to deal with Arrows.
Sundowns took the lead in the 13th minute of the match when playmaker Lucas Ribeiro set up Thapelo Morena to fire home a spectacular effort. Iqraam Rayners then doubled their lead with a tap-in on the half-hour mark.
After going into break 2-0, up Arrows managed to keep Sundowns at bay for the next half-hour. However, the floodgates started to open in the 74th minute when Mokoena made an instant impact off the bench.
Mokoena’s corner found an unmarked Mothobi Mvala to make it 3-0 in the 74th minute, before Namibian striker Peter Shalulile made it 4-0 three minutes later.
Youngster Kutlwano Letlhaku then rounded off the five-star display with a lovely finish in the 81st minute.
Sundowns joined Stellenbosch FC, Orlando Pirates slayers Magesi FC and Marumo Gallants in the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout Cup.
Sundowns’ next assignment is against Royal AM in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night.
