Members of the Northern Cape Executive Council, led by MEC Bentley Vass, along with MEC Nontobeko Vilakazi, visited the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the Vanrhyns Pass bus accident on September 5 and 6.
MEMBERS of the Northern Cape Executive Council, led by the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) and Transport, Safety and Liaison, Bentley Vass, along with the MEC for Social Development, Youth, Women, People with Disabilities and Sport, Arts and Culture, Nontobeko Vilakazi, visited the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the Vanrhyns Pass bus accident on September 5 and 6.
Coghsta spokesperson Tebogo Monyo said that Vass and Vilakazi conveyed the provincial government’s condolences to the grieving families.
“On Thursday, the delegation visited the bereaved families in Soverby and Keimoes in the Kai !Garib Municipality and Paballelo in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality. The MECs assured the families that the local government will explore all avenues to assist them during this period of tragic loss. The provincial government wishes those still in the hospital a speedy recovery and trusts that the medical personnel will do everything possible to ensure that all patients recover,” said Monyo.
The accident occurred on Monday when a bus carrying 38 construction workers from the Northern Cape to a solar plant in the Western Cape veered off Vanrhyns Pass. Ten people, including the bus driver, lost their lives, and 29 others were hospitalised.
According to reports, nine Keimoes residents were among the 10 who died in the accident.
The construction workers had spent the weekend with their families and were en route to Ceres on Monday, where they worked at the Scatec solar energy farm.
The bus, owned by TP Williams Vervoer, reportedly suffered a tyre burst, causing it to veer off the road and roll down the slope, landing at the foot of the mountain. The accident occurred between Vanrhynsdorp and Calvinia at around 5pm.
