KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the crash, which resulted in the death of 11 people, involved at least three trucks, a minibus taxi and a bakkie.

DURBAN – Eleven people have died in a tragic accident on the R612 between Ixopo and Highflats in the Harry Gwala District in the southern parts of KZN this morning.

KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the crash involved at least three trucks, a minibus taxi and a bakkie.

“It has now been confirmed that 11 people have tragically lost their lives in this crash,” he said.

McKenzie said the crash occurred at about 8.30am. He said by 10am nine people were declared deceased and paramedics had treated 12, many of them in a critical condition.

Just before 12pm, McKenzie reported that two more people had succumbed to their injuries bringing the crash death toll to 11.

“The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage and is being investigated by police,” he said.

McKenzie said the road had been closed.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Ixopo SAPS

“It is alleged that today at 08:30, three trucks, a taxi and a bakkie were involved in a collision on the R612 between Highflats and Ixopo. Eleven people that were in a taxi died. Others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention,” she said.
